Chapter Five

“I’m sorry, Garth.” Byron passed a hand through his hair, looking genuinely agitated. “There’s simply no sign of him.” Garth acknowledged his friend’s words with a nod. Something had told him that finding Nicolas wouldn’t be so easy.

“You should go home, get some sleep,” Byron suggested. “We’ll start anew in the morning.”

Garth let out a bitter laugh. “As if I can sleep.” Still, Byron had a point. He needed to check on his sons. Skylar had called him earlier to let him know Corbin and Preston were safe inside the Pierce mansion, but Garth needed to see them, regardless. They were smart boys, and they would figure out something wasn’t right. “I’m going to Skylar’s to talk to the kits. Have you found any trace of that other lead I mentioned?”

“Bella?” Byron frowned. “You really think your ex has something to do with this?”

“I don’t know, but it’s worth a shot. She tried to use the boys against Nico, so it’s clear enough that she’d do anything to get rid of him.”

“Well, I’m looking into it, but nothing yet. Your babysitter doesn’t know anything. Apparently, they met in different places arranged by your ex. Bella seems to be keeping a low profile, but I’ll find her.”

“Thanks.” Garth wasn’t exactly surprised about Byron’s lack of success. Even with the shark’s great influence, it wouldn’t be easy to comb to a city the size of LA. Garth wouldn’t have even known where to begin. But Garth had hope. He needed to if he wanted to stay sane.

“No problem,” his friend and former boss answered. “I’ll keep trying to dig into Nico’s past. I’ve already started sending people to find any other hummingbirds who reside within LA. We’ll come up with something, you’ll see.”

Although Garth suspected the people who’d taken Nicolas weren’t natives of the area, the idea had merit. Taking into account the smell on the envelope, hummingbirds were definitely involved. Perhaps if Byron found someone in the city, that person could lead them in the right direction.

Garth and Byron made arrangements to see each other again in a few hours, and then Garth headed out. Byron’s club, The Grinder, was a good distance away from Skylar’s mansion, and his house had also been in the same neighborhood. That changed when Byron met the seahorse. He’d purchased a property in the proximity of the Pierce family home, with the obvious intention to watch over Skylar. It was sweet, in a somewhat disturbing way, but then again, Byron was a shark. He didn’t know any better.

At the same time, this development made the trip from Byron’s house to Skylar’s very short. In no time, he was driving through the big gates of the Pierce compound. Like Skylar pointed out, security had been tightened to the point of obsession, and it made Garth feel a bit better, at least regarding his children’s safety.

He parked the car in the driveway and made his way inside.

Skylar met him in the foyer. “Hey,” the seahorse greeted him sedately.
